Types of IMC Registrations

4. Specialist Registration

1. Internship Registration
Internship Registration allows a doctor to carry out internship training in a hospital recognised by the Medical Council. Internship registration is open to both graduates of Irish and EU member State Medical Schools. Graduates of one of the five medical schools in Ireland and graduates of recognised medical schools within EU member states are entitled to apply for Internship Registration. For more details please click here.

2. Trainee Specialist Registration
The Medical Council, in consultation with approved postgraduate training bodies and the HSE, maintains a record of postgraduate training posts within the State and their occupancy. For more details please click here.

Applying for a new period of Registration
Registration in the Trainee Specialist Division is for:

  • Interns completing their internship training
  • Medical practitioners who have completed their internship training and are undertaking postgraduate training in recognised training posts.

For more details please click here.

3. General Registration
General Registration is the only form of registration available to medical practitioners who do not practise in individually numbered, identifiable training posts and have not completed recognised specialist medical training. For more details please click here.

4. Specialist Registration
Specialist registration is specifically for medical practitioners who have completed specialist training recognised by the Medical Council and can practise independently as a specialist. For more details please click here.

Certificates of Experience or Equivalent
The Medical Council will use its criteria for issuing a Certificate of Experience in Ireland as a benchmark against which medical graduates who cannot benefit from recognition of their professional qualifications under EU legislation will have their internship training measured. For more details please click here.

Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES)
All applicants for Registration will be required to undergo a Level 1 assessment and verification of their documentation (which may include the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) if applicable). Eligible medical practitioners will then be either required to sit or be exempted from Levels 2 and 3 known as the Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES).

The Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES) consists of two parts. Level 2 is a written examination and is currently in the form of a Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) examination. Level 3 is a clinical examination and is currently in the form of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). For more details please click here.

IMC Registration – Fees
The retention year runs from 1st July to 30th June each year. All doctors who are practising medicine during the retention year must pay the appropriate annual retention fee on or before 1st July of that year. Failure to pay the fee, under Section 79(1) of the Medical Practitioners Act, 2007 will result in the removal of their name from the appropriate register. For more details please click here.
